Loans, cards and business

Credit for loans, cards and your business

Not everyone is buying a house right now. Plenty of people need a limit to work with, operating capital, or simply a card that works.

Short answer

For personal loans and cards, U.S. lenders evaluate score, debt-to-income, length of history and utilization. People starting from zero almost always solve it with a secured card, which reports to all three bureaus and builds history in 6 to 12 months. Business credit adds company structure: EIN, a separate bank account and vendors that report.

What each type of credit usually requires

General market references — every institution has its own policy.

Type of creditUsual scoreWhat matters most
Secured cardNo requirementYour deposit becomes your limit
Entry-level unsecured card620 to 660On-time payment history
Rewards card700+Score, income and low utilization
Personal loan640 to 680Debt-to-income and job stability
Business credit (with personal guarantee)660+Personal score, time in business and revenue
Vendor line (net 30)No personal score requirementEIN, business account and business address

Use this as a map, not a promise: the lender decides under its own policy.

Situations we see most often

Each one has a different path — and mixing the paths is what stalls people.

Newcomer with no history

Nothing to dispute: something to build. Secured card, authorized user status and 6 to 12 months of discipline solve most cases.

Card denied several times

Every denial leaves an inquiry and worsens the next attempt. The fix starts with finding the real reason, which the lender must provide in writing.

Maxed out every month

High utilization drags the score even with on-time payments. It can improve without paying the whole balance, by adjusting the payment date.

A collection blocking everything

First confirm the collection is accurate and within the reporting window. Then negotiate with a documented agreement before paying anything.

Self-employed and gig workers

The income exists, but the lender cannot see it. Organizing deposits, tax filings and statements changes how your profile reads.

Credit for the company

Separating personal from business is the foundation. EIN, its own account, address, and vendors that report to commercial bureaus.

Building history from zero: the sequence that works

This part depends on no dispute at all — it depends on correct setup and time.

Month 1

Open a secured card that reports to all three bureaus

Not every secured card reports to all three. That detail decides whether your effort becomes history or not.

Month 1 to 6

Use little, always pay

Spend a small fraction of the limit and pay before the statement closes. On-time payment is the heaviest factor in any scoring model.

Month 6

Second line of credit

With six clean months, it usually becomes possible to add an unsecured card or a small reporting loan — the mix helps.

Month 12

Review and plan the next goal

With a year of history, the profile stands on its own. Time to decide: house, car or capital for the business.

Questions about loans and cards

Can I build credit with an ITIN, without an SSN?

In some cases yes, at institutions that accept that document. The options are fewer and terms are usually worse, but it is a valid start.

Does being an authorized user help?

It can help when the account is old, uses little of its limit and is always paid on time — and when the issuer reports authorized users to the bureaus. It can also hurt if the primary holder falls behind. It takes real trust on both sides.

How much of my limit can I use without hurting my score?

The less the better. The report reflects the balance reported on the issuer's reporting date — which is why paying before the statement closes usually looks better than paying after.

Does closing an old card help my credit?

Usually not. Closing reduces total available credit (raising your utilization) and, over time, shortens your average account age. If there is no annual fee, keeping it open with light use is usually better.
